Bathroom updates are different, because there is usually more than one bathroom in a house. So while one gets refurbished, the other is still usable. But there’s only one kitchen, so the inconvenience factor of going without is much higher.

Think it wouldn’t be so bad? Try going an entire weekend – from Friday night until Monday morning – without setting foot in your kitchen. Then multiply that amount of time by about 20. That’s how long it would be.
